
ALEXANDRA VOUTZOURAKI

Modern Greek theatre and theatre criticism
She holds a PhD from the Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She graduated with distinction from the Department of Psychology of Panteion University, the Drama School of the National Theatre of Greece, the Department of Theatre Studies of NKUA, and the postgraduate programme of the same Department.
As a theatre scholar, she has been active over the last decade in the field of twentieth-century Modern Greek theatre research, participating in international and national conferences and publishing articles in academic journals in Greece and abroad (Itinera, Manticora. Italian Journal of Performance Studies, Rivista di letteratura comparata italiana, bizantina e neoellinica, Scientific Yearbook of the School of Philosophy, among others). In spring 2025, her study Sexuality in Greek Theatre (1900–1940) was published by Papazisis Publications.
Alongside her academic work, she maintains an active presence in professional theatre as an actress, director, playwright, and translator. Her play Monster premiered in autumn 2024 at the experimental stage of Östgötateatern in Norrköping, Sweden, directed by R. Saouis, and was subsequently presented during the 2024–2025 season at Mikri Gloria Theatre.
She also works professionally as a translator of theatrical works. Among the plays she has translated are Woyzeck by G. Büchner, The Madmen of Valencia by Lope de Vega, Macbeth by William Shakespeare, To Clothe the Naked by Luigi Pirandello, and Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind, among others.
She teaches Theatre History and Dramaturgy at the Advanced School of Dramatic Art Kalvos-Kalamboki “Athenian Stage”. She has also taught in the acting department of IEK Omiros (2019–2023), as well as in the Department of Philology of the University of Crete (2021–2022).
