
GOGO VARZELIOTI
Associate Professor
Theatre Studies - History of Greek Theatre of the 16th–17th Centuries
Gogo Varzelioti serves in the Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens at the rank of Associate Professor. After completing her first two cycles of study, she wrote her doctoral dissertation with a scholarship from the Academy of Athens in Venice, as a research fellow at the Hellenic Institute of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies in Venice (1999–2002).
During the period 2004–2009, she worked as a scientific associate at the Centre for Medieval and Modern Hellenism of the Academy of Athens. She has participated in Greek and international research programmes and has published scholarly studies in collective volumes and academic journals in Greece and abroad.
She is the academic coordinator of the Erasmus+ programme of the Department of Theatre Studies and alternate member of the Supervisory Board of the Library of the School of Philosophy, NKUA. She has taught at undergraduate and postgraduate level at universities in Athens, Venice, Madrid, and Prague.
Her research interests include the history and reception of Modern Greek and European theatre (16th–18th centuries), the theatre of Greeks of the diaspora, everyday life during Venetian rule, and the editing of related archival sources.
She has authored and scientifically edited monographs, collective volumes, and conference proceedings, and from 2013 to 2023 she served as editor of the academic journal Paravasis of the Department of Theatre Studies, NKUA.
She teaches courses in the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of the Department on the history and reception of Medieval and Renaissance theatre, the history of Modern Greek theatre (16th–18th centuries), and the methodology of theatre research. She is also responsible for the academic coordination and implementation of the English-language courses “Contemporary Greece: History, Arts and Letters – Erasmus A and B”, addressed to all incoming Erasmus and CIVIS students of NKUA (first-, second-, and third-cycle studies).
She is a member of the European Network of Research and Documentation of Performances of Ancient Greek Drama (Arc-Net), a partner of the World Philology Union, and a member of the Scholarship Committee of the bequest “AL. MINOTIS in memory of K. PAXINOU”.
In addition, she participates in the editorial teams of the journals Artes Renascentes. Semestrale dell’associazione internazionale “Artes Renascentes”, Engramma.
